John’s recovery update
Our friend and co-leader of CDRC
went home from Kernan Rehabilitation Hospital on June 15th.
John was very excited to get home. John’s recovery is progressing
nicely. He was able to attend
CDRC’s June membership meeting. All
of the CDRC members were happy to see him. John will be out a while longer recuperating.
Service Coordination
CDRC members, Sarah, Gayle and
Kenny had another meeting with Service Coordination to follow up with our May
meeting, where we tried to find the problems in getting folks that currently
have service coordinator out of nursing facilities We were informed at the June meeting that one of the Service
Coordinators we met with was able to re-open one of her old client’s cases.
This woman has a developmental disability .
The Service Coordinator (Mary) was going to see the woman in the nursing
facility the same day as our meeting.
Mary was quite excited to be working with this woman again.
Another Service Coordinator is on her way to getting a man with a
developmental disability out of another nursing facility.
We will be trying to locate more Service Coordinators that are working
with folks with developmental disabilities that wish to transfer from a nursing
facility to the community.
Sunshine
Folk Award.
The
Sun Shine folk received an award from the Annual Conference of the Training and
Advocacy Support Center (TASC) – a division of the National Disability Rights
Network (NDRN). CDRC members Gayle, Floyd any Kenny were there to receive the
award. We showed the video with the
captions at the presentation. The
video got rave reviews from the audience. After
the video, Gayle spoke about the sunshine folk, explaining what we do.
Floyd spoke about his experiences living in a nursing facility.
Kenny reported on his activities getting 2 people with disabilities out
of a Laurel Nursing Facility. He is supporting CDRC members Vicki & Dwayne
to return to the community. Hopefully, they will both be leaving the same
facility this summer! J
Federal
Monitoring Team Interviews
The week of July 10th,
The Federal Government branch that funds: 1)The DD Council (they are the people
that fund the CDRC); 2) The Maryland Disability Law Center (MDLC), and 3) The
Kennedy Krieger Institute, will be in Maryland to interview advocates to make
sure these three organizations are doing their jobs of supporting and
representing the disability community. Since
the federal government gives each of these important agencies money for their
work, they need to check in with them every so often and make sure they are
doing their jobs. Not individual people doing their jobs, but the organizations
as a whole. For example, is the DD Council giving a grant to support self
advocacy in Maryland? Well...of
course the answer is yes, because they give a grant to CDRC.
The people conducting these reviews wants to make sure they talk to all sorts of
people when they come to Maryland. So they have set up a number of different
meetings. This will be a “town meeting”, where people can express their
opinions about each of the organizations and their work.
